Selecting the finalists for this season’s Miss Basketball Award was no easy task, said Dorene Ingalls, the St. Ignace girls basketball coach who serves as chairwoman for the state’s top individual honor.

The award, given annually to the state’s top senior by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, started with a list of 10 candidates and was narrowed down to five finalists – all guards.

“The five candidates have been consistently the cream of the crop throughout their prep careers,” Ingalls said.

The finalists are:

Deja Church, Southfield A&T

Kierra Fletcher, Warren Cousino

• Kamaria McDaniel, Dearborn Heights Robichaud

Destiny Pitts, Birmingham Detroit Country Day

• Jordan Walker, Muskegon Mona Shores

The winner will be announced March 13 and honored at the Free Press.

Ingalls said the committee did an excellent job of selecting names familiar to most fans.

Fletcher, who is 5-feet-9 and rated a five-star prospect by ESPN, has signed with Georgia Tech. She helped Cousino win a state championship last season and had recruiting interest from Division I programs Notre Dame, Illinois and Minnesota.

Walker, who committed to Western Michigan in 2015, is a 5-8 point guard who pushed Mona Shores to a 14-3 record. She became the fastest Sailor to score 1,000 points last season and set the school record for career points last month.

Pitts, who stands 6 feet, is a four-star guard and Minnesota signee. ESPN ranks her the No. 62 player in the nation. She helped Country Day to a 16-0 record.

Church, a 5-10 three-star guard who signed with Michigan, averages 19.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.1 steals. Southfield is 11-4 and in first place in the Oakland Activities Association’s Red Division.

McDaniel, a 5-10 shooting guard, helped Robichaud to a 10-7 record. She cracked the 1,000-point plateau this season and is a McDonald’s All-American Game nominee. The three-star recruit signed with Penn State.

In December, each of the five girls were ranked in the top 20 on the Free Press’ list of the top 100 girls basketball players in Michigan.

Catholic girls hoops title: FH Mercy puts clamps down on Marian - Mercy avenged a loss last season with its first league title in three years; Shrine tops Our Lady of the Lakes

After three years, Chloe Godbold finally got the Catholic League championship trophy in her hand. And all she could do was start sneezing.

Farmington Hills Mercy players embrace after beating Birmingham Marian, 45-36, to win the Catholic League A/B Division girls basketball title Feb. 19 at Wayne State.

Farmington Hills Mercy players embrace after beating Birmingham Marian, 45-36, to win the Catholic League A/B Division girls basketball title Feb. 19 at Wayne State.

But don’t worry, the Farmington Hills Mercy guard isn’t allergic to winning. In fact, she was just what the doctor ordered as the Marlins won their first league title in three seasons, 45-36, over Bloomfield Hills Marian today at Wayne State.

Mercy (17-2) avenged a loss to Marian last year by giving the Mustangs a dose of their own medicine: a lock-down defense.

“We worked hard as a team and we just came here and handled business today,” said Godbold, who had a game-high 19 points in the A/B title game. “Our plan was to box out and get a lot more rebounds than when we played them the other two times (this season). Our other thing was to get out on their shooters.”

“We think we play good D,” Mercy coach Gary Morris said. “We mix it up and play more zone. Defensively, we think we’re pretty solid, and obviously if you’re playing good defense it’s going to allow you to stay in the game.”

Marian got the first two baskets of the game, but the only other time the Mustangs held a lead was a 3-minute stretch late in the second quarter. Godbold hit a three-pointer in the final minute before halftime and the Marlins didn’t look back.

“Each team had their runs early,” Morris said. “I think the biggest lead in the first half was four (17-13), and then I was very happy that we were the team in the second half that seized the lead and were able to get it above four. It feels pretty good once you get it to seven because that makes it a three-possession game. I’m always worried about them coming down and hitting a three. I thought we really contested well against those.”

Marian (13-5) was just 2 of 12 outside the arc and couldn’t erase the deficit. Lauren Montalbano led the Mustangs with 12 and Olivia Moore added 10.

Godbold, who transferred to Mercy from Southfield Christian following her freshman year, was relieved to finally make good on a team goal.

“This year we were like, ‘We’re going to win Catholic Leagues,’ and we set out to do that and we did that,” she said. “I’m just so proud of our team; we all work hard in practice and I’m just so happy that we actually could feel what we wanted to do this season.”

Royal Oak Shrine celebrates its first Catholic League girls basketball title since 1991 after holding off Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, 52-49, Feb. 19 at Wayne State.

Royal Oak Shrine celebrates its first Catholic League girls basketball title since 1991 after holding off Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, 52-49, Feb. 19 at Wayne State.

Royal Oak Shrine 52, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 47: Shrine won its first C/D championship since 1991 by avenging a 21-point loss from mid-season.

“I think that Lakes really underestimated us, and we knew we had the power to beat them if we played right and we played with the right defense. They didn’t expect us to come out and win,” said captain Liz Mantha, who scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half and gave her team the lead for good on a three-point play with 1:45 remaining.

Sophomore Grace Murray led Shrine (14-4) with 27 points. Rebecca Kruliski scored six, and had three key steals in the final quarter.

“We came into the game kind of nervous, but as a whole, we were ready to go,” Kruliski said. “We weren’t going to be scared or intimidated by them, we just needed to play hard. We just came in on our ‘A’ game, playing hard, with a hard defense.”

The defending champion Lakers (14-3) raced out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter by hitting 8 of 12 attempts from the floor. But as their shooting cooled down, the Lady Knights battled back to take the lead 5 seconds before halftime. There were 12 lead changes and nine ties overall.

“That game was so nip-and-tuck,” Shrine coach Wayne Gigante said. “They went up, we went up, it was just a back-and-forth game; but once that buzzer sounded at the end, it was just a huge relief.”

What to watch in high school girls basketball tournament

Ypsilanti Arbor Prep's Ro'Zhane Wells embraces her teammate Jasmine Henry after defeating Traverse City St. Francis 54-37 during the MHSAA girls basketball Class C finals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Ypsilanti Arbor Prep’s Ro’Zhane Wells embraces her teammate Jasmine Henry after defeating Traverse City St. Francis 54-37 during the MHSAA girls basketball Class C finals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Ten storylines to follow when the girls basketball state tournament begins this week:

Best bets to repeat?

One thing is certain: A new champion will be crowned in Class C, since  Ypsilanti Arbor Prep jumped to Class B. Warren Cousino could repeat in Class A, but faces stiff competition in a wide-open field. Marshall is having another good year in Class B, but Arbor Prep and Birmingham Detroit Country Day are contenders. Pittsford has the best chance to defend a title. It entered the final week of the regular season unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Class D.

Will this be the year for Al DeMott and Sandusky?

It’s been a terrific career in the thumb area for DeMott, who since taking over the Sandusky program in 1979 has won almost 700 games. The only thing missing is a state title. Sandusky lost in the 1999 Class C final to St. Ignace, and this year’s team could contend again. The Redskins are a deep, experienced squad that plays tenacious defense and gets balanced scoring. They were unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Class C entering the regular season’s final week.

Can a team play spoiler in Class B?

Arbor Prep and Country Day should be favored entering the tournament, but there are dark-horse candidates. Grand Rapids Catholic Central and Williamston only had one loss going into last week, and both are veteran teams. Also in the mix is Freeland, which  was 19-0, and one can’t discount Marshall, which won 16 of its first 18 games and has six players back from its state championship team.

Warren Cousino's Kierra Fletcher makes a jump shot against Detroit Martin Luther King's Jasmine Flowers and Jordan Lewis, during the MHSAA girls basketball Class A finals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Warren Cousino’s Kierra Fletcher makes a jump shot against Detroit Martin Luther King’s Jasmine Flowers and Jordan Lewis, during the MHSAA girls basketball Class A finals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Which Miss Basketball candidate will last longest?

It’s hard to bet against Warren Cousino senior Kierra Fletcher, who propelled Cousino to the Class A state title at Breslin Center last season.   That 27-point, eight-rebound performance? The Georgia Tech signee will look to best it this year. Others in play for a run are Country Day’s Destiny Pitts (Minnesota signee) and Western Michigan signee Jordan Walker, Muskegon Mona Shores’ all-time leading scorer.

Most competitive district?

The Class A district at East Lansing has four teams that entered Friday with at least 13 wins, including state-ranked DeWitt (No. 5) and East Lansing (honorable mention). Lansing Waverly and Grand Ledge are the other teams.

Collision course?

Saginaw Heritage is ranked No. 3 in Class A and Midland Dow is No. 4. Barring an upset of Heritage on Monday by Mt. Pleasant, Heritage will host Dow in a regional semifinal showdown on Wednesday.

Will Detroit King and Cousino rematch in Class A final?

It certainly is possible for the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams. Neither should be tested in districts and both have favorable regionals.

St. Ignace's players with the championship trophy after their 64-60 overtime win over Pittsford in the Class D girls basketball final on March 21, 2015, in East Lansing.

St. Ignace’s players with the championship trophy after their 64-60 overtime win over Pittsford in the Class D girls basketball final on March 21, 2015, in East Lansing.

How will St. Ignace fare in Class C?

The state power has fluctuated between Classes C and D over the years, but has won state titles in both. St. Ignace likely will have a regional final showdown against unbeaten Munising.

Coaching legends still going strong

Frank Orlando of Country Day and William Winfield of Detroit King have combined to win close to 1,500 games and make 27 state championship game appearances. They account for almost 70 years of combined coaching experience, and both have good chances of winning state titles this year. Orlando is chasing title No. 12. Winfield is after his sixth championship.

Which juniors will jump-start their Miss Basketball campaigns for 2018?

The best bets are Kaela Webb of Country Day (Marquette commitment), Lasha Petree of Arbor Prep, Jaida Hampton of East Lansing and Maddie Watters of Williamston.

Mercy girls storm into quarterfinals - Western has no answers for Marlins' suffocating defense, 35-14

They say if defense wins championships, then the Farmington Hills Mercy girls basketball team is on the right path.

The Marlins, who overcame a slow start leading only 5-4 after one quarter, used their signature half-court trap in the second and it propelled them to their first Class A regional crown since 2014 with a 35-14 victory Thursday night over Walled Lake Western in the finals at North Farmington.

With the victory, Mercy (22-3) advances to the state quarterfinals beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 at Southfield against defending Class A champion Warren Cousino (23-2), which survived its regional final with a 41-39 overtime win over Bloomfield Hills Marian.

The Mercy girls basketball team celebrates after winning the Class A regional at North Farmington.

The Mercy girls basketball team celebrates after winning the Class A regional at North Farmington.

It was the half-court trap that tipped the scales in Mercy’s favor in a 47-42 regional semifinal win over Hartland and it was again the magic potion against Western, which bowed out with a 20-5 overall record.

“That’s been a good defense for us,” Morris said. “We rely on pressure, try and create turnovers to generate some offense, get some easy baskets. I think we execute it pretty well. I think other teams prepare for it because at this point there’s no secrets. Fortunately it was effective for us, especially in the regional. I thought we were solid defensively in everything we did. That was really good to see.”

The Marlins extended their lead to 20-10 at halftime and put the game away by outscoring the Warriors 12-2 in the third quarter.

“I don’t think it was’t really a secret that we’d come out with it, but it’s really how well they prepare to come out with it,” said Mercy junior guard Jenna Schluter of the half-court trap. “I think they just couldn’t find a way around it.”

Mercy went only 1-of-10 from the field in the opening quarter and made just 32.2 percent of its shots, but yet won by 21 points.

“It shows how good of a team we are that we can come out and not hit shots and still win by how much we won,” Schluter said. “I think we trust each other as a team. We’re a good defensive team and offensive team, but if we’re not good offensively, we can come out and play really good defense.”

Western made only 5-of-27 shots from the floor (18.5 percent) and committed 11 turnovers after having just six in a 48-42 regional semifinal win over Novi.

The Warriors’ leading scorer, junior guard Janara Flowers, finished with just three points.

“That was probably the best defensive effort that we’ve had put against us all year,” Western coach Skip Stevenson said of the Marlins. “They did the things that we like to pride ourselves on here. They played great defense and the credit goes to them. They won the game. They deserved this region, there’s no doubt about it.”

Mercy’s hero in the upset win over Hartland, senior guard Jackie Bauer, finished with a team-high nine points hitting three timely 3-pointers, two in the second quarter and one in the third.

“So far she’s been hitting ‘threes’ to start to the game,” Morris said of Bauer. “That wasn’t the case today, but then eventually you figure she’s going to hit shots and she did.”

Senior guard Chloe Godbold and Schluter each added eight points.

“I thought we had a number of players play really well,” Morris said. “I’m happy for this group. It’s been a hard working group. They really compete and it’s great to win a regional final.”

Mercy slowly dismantled Western, which had only four players score, led by sophomore guard Kailee Ford’s six pints.

“It was the same half-court trap that gave Hartland fits,” Stevenson said. “We looked at it and we thought we were going to be O.K. We wanted to attack it head-on-head. We rolled the dice with it  We looked O.K. at times, but they made us pay every time. And what was worse is that we didn’t hit a shot. We needed to hit just a couple of them.”

Despite the loss, Stevenson was proud of the season the Warriors put together.

“Like I told them in there, I said, ‘Yes, it’s disappointing and would I have liked a better result? Absolutely,'” said Stevenson, who loses five seniors to graduation. “It’s tough, but it’s the whole body of work in the season. Twenty wins, won the (KLAA) North (Division), won the district and made the regional finals. I can leave here tonight being very content.”

Meanwhile, the Marlins will try and earn a spot in the state semifinals for the first time since 2014 with Cousino standing in the way.

“I so excited and I think our team works really hard,” Schluter said. “I think we deserve this and we’re all really excited.”
