Alexis Sevillian

Goodrich

5 feet 6, senior guard

Averaged 23 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 3.6 steals. A tough, hard-nosed player, she was able to come up with the big pass or big basket during her varsity career. A finalist for Miss Basketball.

Sevillian: “I have really enjoyed my time playing at Goodrich. I wouldn’t want to have played or been anywhere else. Goodrich has provided me an opportunity to excel academically and athletically. I’ve been fortunate to play with some talented players during my career at Goodrich; they have all set great examples of hard work and leadership. I tried to emulate those traits as much as possible. My coaches and teammates helped make this season one that I’ll never forget.”

Coach Jason Gray: “We can really look and say she had to do more of everything in her senior year than anybody else.”

Kysre Gondrezick

Benton Harbor

5-9, Sr. G (captain)

The senior point guard scored 851 points this season, second in state history. Her 72 points against Buchanan in the district opener was a state record. She finished her career with 2,827 points, also second in state history. She was the fourth U-M signee to win the Miss Basketball Award. She averaged 40.5 points per game this season.

Gondrezick: “I really came into my own this summer. My entire life I played alongside my sister Kalabrya. I finally understood who Kysre was and what type of basketball player that I want to be and what my strengths and weaknesses were. Playing for Michigan Crossover, I identified all that.”

Coach Lisa Harvey-Gondrezick: “Kysre’s skill sets provide an arsenal of attack off the dribble, midrange shots and a three-point perimeter threat. Her IQ of the game enhances the showcase of others by her precision passing abilities and court recognition in transition and half-court. She’s an amazing talent to watch.”

Mardrekia Cook, Muskegon

Mardrekia Cook, Muskegon

Mardrekia Cook

Muskegon

6-0, Sr. G-F

An amazing talent, the all-around star recorded two quadruple-doubles during the season. Averaged 23 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, three blocked shots and three steals. Finished second in Miss Basketball voting. Signed with Michigan State.

Cook: “I thought I had a good senior year. I increased my scoring average. I wanted to average 25 points per game, but I fell a little short. My points and assists went up. I enjoyed my career at Muskegon, and I have a lot of great memories.”

Coach Rodney Walker: “Mardrekia Cook is one of the most gifted players that I have ever coached. She has a very high basketball IQ. Mardrekia is a really good student of the game of basketball. Being a student of the game will help her be very successful on the college level. I truly believe that she has not tapped into her full potential. Her ability to be effective at every position on the floor is truly an asset in the game of basketball.”

Cassidy Boench, Bay City Glenn

A force in the middle all season, Boensch was dominant at both ends, averaging 12.2 rebounds, 17.8 points and 5.9 blocked shots. Led team to Class B Final Four. Committed to Grand Valley State.

Boensch: “We worked so hard to get here and be at the finals. It has been an amazing season.”

Coach Cory Snider: “She has done everything the right way, and she has put herself in a position to represent our school and community in the right way. She deserved to be a Miss Basketball candidate.”

Kierra Fletcher, Warren Cousino

Kierra Fletcher, Warren Cousino

Kierra Fletcher

Warren Cousino

5-9, Jr. PG

She took the Class A state tournament by storm, averaging 27 points a game in the playoffs, including 35 points in the semifinals and 27 in the championship game, to give Cousino its first state title. On the season, she averaged 24 points, 9.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 4.2 steals.

Fletcher: “I just want to have a basketball IQ. It doesn’t really matter how much I score. I do whatever I have to do to win. Sometimes Coach (Mike) Lee kind of tells me I have to be more selfish, but that’s just not who I am. I get hyped when another person on my team makes a play, it gets me going.”

Coach Mike Lee: “She can score at will, but she’s also the first one to say that she will take an assist over a bucket. But when she knows that the game is on the line, she wants the ball in her hands, and that’s what winners and competitors do. She’s a very unselfish player as well as a great student and a great kid.”

Led the Patriots to their first state title, posting a 23-4 record and putting the Macomb Area County school on the basketball map. Has a seven-year record of 126-41 and brings back one of the state’s best players next year in Kierra Fletcher and a top sophomore in Kate McArthur.

Lee: “The girls put in the work over the summer, and I just thought this group had a chance to win a state title. They believed in each other. I couldn’t be any prouder of the girls and our community. They made the sacrifice.”

Reaching Higher notebook: Nicole Elmblad has advice for campers

Michigan guard Nicole Elmblad passes the ball against Michigan State on Jan. 4, 2015.

Michigan guard Nicole Elmblad passes the ball against Michigan State on Jan. 4, 2015.

Nicole Elmblad remembers what it’s like to be an elite recruit in Michigan, so she had plenty to say Monday during the MHSAA Reaching Higher Showcase at Milford.

A star at St. Ignace La Salle, Elmblad helped her school win the state title as a senior. Her basketball journey took her to the University of Michigan and now she’s preparing for U-M’s medical school. Last year, she was nominated for the NCAA Women of the Year award, which honors the most outstanding female student-athletes across the country.

“The biggest thing here is to have fun,” she told the players. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.”

Elmblad went from starting at U-M to the bench, which frustrated her at the time. But eventually, she became a defensive stopper and complementary player.

“Honestly, I could talk about basketball all day and my experiences,” she said. “Sometimes I can ramble on. I just wanted to talk about things that are key to be a successful high school and college basketball player. I just wanted to answer questions that they had, because everyone is just looking for advice at this stage.

“When I was their age, it was just about the whole recruiting process. What is the right timeline and when should I be committing to schools? Seeing other players and doing different timelines, one thing I learned is that there is no specific timeline and that helped me as I was going through.”

Elmblad added that college basketball is a world apart from high school hoops.

“Right away; as soon as you get there you’re surrounded by some of the best basketball players from around the state and even the country,” said Elmblad. “Playing at Michigan was a pretty special experience. Great athletes and great people. As soon as you start practices and get into workouts over the summer you realize it’s like, ‘Hey, I’m no longer the best player here’ and you have to really work to make a contribution.”

Elmblad hasn’t caught the coaching bug yet with medical school on the horizon.

“Maybe one day I’ll get into high school or middle school,” said Elmblad. “For now I’m chasing other career paths. I’m working at the hospital right now at U-M and doing research.”

SEASON OF CHANGE: Kayla Belles and Ithaca made it to the Breslin Center last season, losing, 72-44, in a Class C semifinal to eventual champion Ypsilanti Arbor Prep.

Now Belles is the only returning starter on a team that also has a new coach in Ty Warczinsky.

“Our coach (Jessie Rayburn) got pregnant, so she stepped down and we have a new coach, so there has been a lot of change,” said the 6-foot-3 forward-center.

Last year as a sophomore, Belles averaged 18.3 points, 13 rebounds and 4.2 blocked shots per game.

Rayburn nudged her into the camp.

“She set the whole thing up, “ said Belles, who has offers from BYU, Central Michigan and Michigan State. “We only have one or two seniors, so I’ll have to step up. We went to all the camps this summer.

“I’m here to strengthen my skills. I try not to focus on if there are scouts or anything. Going against other good competition that’s here.”

The players assembled on Team 1 Monday in Milford at the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Reaching Higher Showcase were some of the most decorated entering the 2016-17 season.

Pittsford's Jaycie Berger

“I looked at it, I didn’t know many of the girls,” said Kayla Belles of Ithaca High. “That’s a good way to go into it.”

All Belles did last year as a sophomore was average 18.3 points and 13 rebounds in leading her team to the Class C state semifinal before losing to eventual champion Ypsilanti Arbor Prep.

One of her teammates Monday was all-state guard Jaycie Burger, who helped Pittsford to the Class D state title. She averaged 20 points, 7.5 assists, five steals and 3.5 rebounds.

“I’ve been coming here ever since I was a freshman, so I like coming,” Burger said. “It gets me ready for the beginning of the year. It gets me excited to get going. Through the month of June, we used all 15 dates and we went to a lot of shoot-outs throughout Michigan. It was good.”

Pittsford lost two starters, but again will be in the hunt for a trip to the Breslin Center.

Reaching Higher notebook: Nicole Elmblad has advice for campers

“I’m ready for the target,” Burger said.

There are still times, Burger said, that the reality of being a state champion hasn’t sunk in.

“It’s still sort of like a dream,” she said. “Like yesterday, I was talking to someone about football, and he’s done, and he was like: ‘This is like losing the state championship.’ I said I know how you feel, but he said: ‘But you won.’ I still don’t feel like I did that.

“I kind of had a feeling we could get it done after I knew we were going back to the Breslin. I felt like we were just breezing past everyone we played. I kind of started thinking maybe we could, but I didn’t want to jinx myself.”

There was no jinx for Marshall, where Nikki Tucker and her teammates shocked Grand Rapids South Christian to capture the Class B crown. The 5-foot-10 forward averaged 12.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.1 steals and two assists per game.

“I’m here to get more exposure, I’m not committed yet,” Tucker said. “I want to keep my options open. A lot of schools contacted me (after the state title). We will still be focusing on winning the state title, but it opened some doors. I’ve had a lot of visits in June and July, and I have a lot more coming up in September.”

She knows that Marshall will be the team to beat in Class B this year.

“We’re just focusing on what we need to do each game,” Tucker said. “Even in scrimmages, we’re just realizing everyone is going to give us their best.”

Maizie Taylor doesn’t have to worry about recruiting yet. She’s entering her sophomore season and will form a potent Midland Dow backcourt with her sister, three-point shooter Ellie, while Kaylee Wasco will provide height in the middle.

As a freshman, Taylor averaged 7.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

“I’m not playing in a tournament today, and I just wanted to get some good basketball in,” Taylor said.

Warren Cousino holds up the trophy after defeating Detroit Martin Luther King 67-65, during the MHSAA girls basketball Class A finals at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

1. Muskegon Mona Shores

Record last year: 21-4

Outlook: Jordan Walker is a legitimate Miss Basketball candidate, averaging 20 points per game last year along with 8.9 rebounds and five assists despite tearing her ACL and only being cleared to play last Dec. 1. Alyza Winston is a spectacular sophomore point guard. She averaged 17.4 points as a freshman, scoring 435 points. With perhaps the most explosive backcourt in the state, Mona Shores is looking for a visit to the Breslin.

2. Birmingham Detroit Country Day

Record last year: 24-2.

Outlook: The Lady Yellowjackets return four Division I prospects in Destiny Pitts, Tylar Bennett, Kaela Webb and Maxine Moore. Memories of last year’s semifinal loss are still in the minds of the team. To make sure the veterans stay sharp coach Frank Orlando has put together a monster schedule, featuring some of the top teams in Class A and B.

Girls hoops: Country Day’s fab four face a tough road

3. Warren Cousino

Record last year: 23-4

Outlook: The defending Class A champions return four of five starters, led by Miss Basketball candidate Kierra Fletcher. She dominated play at the Breslin Center, shooting an amazing 72.2% from the field combined in the semifinal and final. She averaged 23 points, 9.8 rebounds, six steals and six assists as a junior. Sophomore guard Kate McArthur expanded her game and will be more than a three-point shooter. She averaged 13 points, six assists and five rebounds per game. The Patriots will be a tough out again.

4. Ypsilanti Arbor Prep

Record last year: 25-2

Outlook: The defending Class C champs lost their star player in Nastassja Chambers, but bring back four starters and a great transfer in Lasha Petree, a 6-foot junior guard who transferred from Salem with great shooting range and triple-double capabilities. Senior guard Rozhane Wells averaged 12 points a game last year and she’ll be flanked by Cydney Williams, the team’s leading rebounder last year, Adrienne Anderson and Kayla Knight.

5. Midland Dow

Record last year: 19-4

Outlook: With Saginaw Heritage and Midland around it’s tough to get out of the Saginaw Valley League, but Dow has experience, speed and some youth. Ellie Taylor (St. Louis University) averaged 18.8 points per game last year. Kaylee Wasco is a solid center. Molly Davis (9.8 points, four rebounds) has multiple D-I offers and Maizie Taylor had a solid freshman year, averaging 7.4 points and 4.5 rebounds.

6. Saginaw Heritage

Record last year: 22-2

Outlook: Heritage is loaded and returns four starters from a year ago. Moira Joiner was an All-Stater as a freshman. Courtney McInerney is a solid 6-2 center. Junior Jessi Bicknell and sophomore Mallory McCartney started last year. Other key players are Shine Strickland-Gillis and Haley Brefka.

7. Grand Rapids Catholic Central

Record last year: 23-3

Outlook: Only one player graduated from last year’s team so CC will be a factor. Seniors Sophia Karasinski and Kyra Bussell have both committed to Central Michigan. Karasinski is a dynamic scorer with range and Bussell can score inside and out. Senior Shaniya Huggins is a lightning quick guard and Myka Cromwell is a crafty scorer with range. Senior Tess Ens is a four-sport athlete and a good rebounder. Other contributors will be Sophia Conroy, Abigail Tepper and Jakarri Alven, who was a state track champion as a freshman.

8. Detroit King

Record last year: 24-2

Outlook: King made it to the championship game, got down early and put on a furious rally before losing to Warren Cousino. Senior point guard Alicia Norman is a four-year starter and has been around forever. Tia Tedford played a significant role last year and should be an All-PSL candidate. Deljanae Williams will be a factor. King won’t be tall, but they’ll run and press and dominate the league.

9. Okemos

Record last year: 8-12

Outlook: Laya Hartman is ranked as the 29th-best sophomore in the class of 2019. The 5-11 guard averaged 18 points, six rebounds and four assists last year. She’ll get help from 6-foot freshman post player Jasmine Clerkley, who already has scholarship offers from Western and Central Michigan. Bergin Robinson is a solid three-point shooter and freshman Leah Zaleski is expected to be the starting point guard.

10. Port Huron Northern

Record last year: 21-5

Outlook: Eight of nine players return from a team that beat Warren Cousino twice last season and shared the MAC Red crown. Senior Bree Bauer is the post presence. She averaged 11.3 points per game last year. Junior guard Sami Klink averaged 10.4 points and 6.3 rebounds. Senior Jenna Koppinger and Kathleen O’Connor round out the returning starters.

11. Ann Arbor Huron

Record last year: 19-5

Outlook: The team was one game away from making it to the Breslin Center last year. Six core players return for coach Lindsay Klemmer. Senior Emily Marsh is 6-feet and can guard all five positions. She averaged nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots a game year. Senior Kara Wilson is a 5-7 guard with speed and strength and has committed to Illinois-Chicago. Junior Shamin Wambere is a 6-foot rising post player. Junior Sasha Thomas is a 5-6 combo guard who is a ball hawk on defense. Sophomore Eden Johnson is a 6-1 guard who transferred from Skyline. She can shoot, pass and defend.

12. Wayne Memorial

Record last year: 16-5

Outlook: The KLAA co-champs have all five starters back and are led by Camree’ Clegg (Clemson), who averaged 24.1 points, 7.3 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game. She gets plenty of help from Amara Chikwe (Youngstown State), who averaged a double-double a year ago, 11.5 points and 13 rebounds a game to go with four blocked shots. Jeanae Terry is a threat, bringing 13 points, five assists and 7.8 rebounds per game to the table as a point guard.

13. Southfield A&T

Record last year: N/A (new school)

Outlook: The Warriors are a new team, combining Southfield-Lathrup with Southfield High Schools. Deja Church (Michigan) can do it all at either guard or forward. Sophomore Alexis Johnson was a solid player last year for Southfield High and should form a solid 1-2 punch with Church. Freshman Cheyenne McEvans brings a big-time reputation to the team and should start.

14. Williamston

Record last year: 19-4

Outlook: Four key starters return for the Hornets, who lost in the regional semifinal. Maddie Watters is the leader, averaging 17.9 points last year. Allison Peplowski is an inside threat, scoring 6.7 points per game last year and 5.7 rebounds. Halle Wisbiski averaged six points per game and Elana Lycos 4.2 a year ago.

15. Lansing Waverly

Record last year: 14-8

Outlook: Six returning letter winners and three transfers should have Waverly in the mix. Alisia Smith is a 6-3 senior who averaged 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots per game. She’ll be joined on the front line by 6-2 junior Malin Smith, who averaged eight points and seven rebounds per game. Senior Maya Bennett and junior Jazlynn Wilcox will help the rotation along with Isabella Pizzo and Maya Garrett. Transfers include Tazjah Pruitt and Ciara Wilheart from Lansing Everett, and Evelyn Taylor from East Lansing. If the team meshes it could be dangerous in March.

16. Flint Carman-Ainsworth

Record last year: 15-6

Outlook: Another team in the tough Saginaw Valley. Sophomore Destiny Strother leads the returners. A pure shooter, she averaged 15.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 3.2 assists per game. She’ll get help from senior center Shakara Johnson, who averaged 6.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots per game. Three freshmen will contribute: Xeryia Tartt, Chenelle King and Jessiana Aaron.

17. Marshall

Record last year: 27-1

Outlook: The defending Class B champions have six players back that should keep them in the hunt for another trip to the Breslin Center. Senior forward Nikki Tucker and senior guard Jill Konkle are both All-State players and will pace the offense, while captain Taryn Long is a solid guard. Tucker averaged 12.7 points and eight rebounds per game while Konkle was at 8.2 points and 4.5 boards. Carlee Long was an All-League performer and is one of four captains. Georgianna Pratley is the center while junior forward/guard Natalie Tucker is in the rotation.

18. Hartland

Record last year: 15-5

Outlook: Despite a winning record last season, the perception was Hartland underachieved, especially on rebounding and defense. Lexey Tobel has committed to Detroit Mercy after averaging 14.1 points as a junior. Graysen Cockerham led the team in rebounding at 6.5 per game. Michelle Moraitis is the team’s best defensive player and junior Emily Messner will be a top contributor. Freshman Whitney Sollom, a 6-2 post player, has already garnered interest from MSU, U-M and Louisville.

19. Muskegon Reeths-Puffer

Record last year: 15-6

Outlook: Nine seniors return, so coach Brandon Barry is expecting a big year. Delaney Bolles, Brooke Larabee, Elysia Mattos and Artrese Williams are the returning starters. Bolles led the team in rebounds, Larabee in scoring and Mattos in assists. Williams is a defensive demon and heart and soul of the team.

20. St. John’s

Record last year: 22-4

Outlook: Two starters return from last year, junior Maddie Maloney, a first-team All-League performer who has started three years on the varsity, and senior Erika Ballinger, another first-team performer in the backcourt. Other returning players are Nina Bozzo, Olivia Maurer, Alexis Stillman and Emily Thelen.

Girls hoops: Country Day’s fab four face a tough road

When last we left Birmingham Detroit Country Day, the Yellowjackets had just lost, 57-46, to Grand Rapids South Christian in the girls Class B semifinal basketball game at the Breslin Center.

South Christian’s Markayla Vander locked up All-State guard-forward Destiny Pitts. Tylar Bennett, a 6-foot-4 center, was a non-factor. Guard Kaela Webb, also an All-Stater, was neutralized and Maxine Moore couldn’t get free of the suffocating Sailors defense.

The Yellowjackets were top-ranked and had only lost one game entering the semifinals.

“We got beat up,” said Pitts, a Miss Basketball contender this season. “It wasn’t a good feeling, so we know what we want to do. We got blindsided. We’ve felt both sides, winning and losing. We took some things for granted.”

Pitts, Bennett, Webb and Moore are back for the Yellowjackets and coach Frank Orlando, who is starting his 50th overall year of coaching and would like nothing better than to finish a half-century of mentoring with a championship.

Bennett, a senior, has committed to Clemson and Pitts has picked Minnesota. Webb, a junior, has already committed to Marquette. Moore is a junior.

After the semifinal loss, Orlando made significant changes in preseason preparation and how he went about the first week of practice. To make sure the seasoned group stayed focused, he put together a challenging schedule of Class A and B powers.

“You’ve got Tylar, Destiny, Kaela and Max,” said Orlando. “They’re all good players, but they have to say ‘I’m going to sacrifice for this person.’ It’s all right if they score. We’ll see if that happens.”

Adrian Folks, a sophomore forward, will see time, and Orlando is switching to multiple point guards — Webb and sophomore Jasmine Powell. Pitts could also play point if needed.

“I’ll play 10 in the beginning and see who can go,” said Orlando. “I had to play a tough schedule to make it competitive. I wanted to have real tough teams during the year so they’d be ready by tournament time.”

The South Christian loss is still fresh.

“I think that (loss) would give them the idea that you have to work hard the whole year, you have to work extremely hard,” said Orlando. “You can’t take anything for granted. (Last year) I didn’t think they realized it, but I think they felt that we’d go in there and get to the state finals and that’s the way it was. It wasn’t that way. The hungrier team won.”

Orlando said this year’s group is working harder.

“We’re anticipating a tougher game and when we get that tougher game, we’ll be ready to play,” said Orlando.

“We’ve changed some things,” said Pitts. “The big difference is the roster is smaller … we only have 10 this year. It could hurt if we have injury problems. It’ll help us stay close-knit. Everybody will play a significant role.

“We know what we have to do. Last year taught us that you can’t do what you want to do. You have to be in the structure of the program. I think that helped reel everybody back in. I think there’s a lot to look forward to this year.”

Orlando has coached some great players, with Peggy Evans being at the top of the list. And Pitts is right up there, too.

“She can do so many things,” said Orlando. “She can pass the ball real well. She can drive to the basket. She can shoot it. She does little things that you don’t notice. She’ll rebound if she has to. She was the leading rebounder in the state semifinals and she’s a guard.”

Said Webb: “Nobody likes to lose and I don’t plan on doing that anymore. I won (a state title) my freshman year and I’m hungry (for another). It’ll be tough. We loaded up the schedule this year.”

Birmingham Detroit Country Day coach Frank Orlando instructs his players during a recent practice. Last season, the Yellowjackets lost in the state semifinals. “You have to work hard the whole year,” said Orlando. “You can’t take anything for granted.”

Young Okemos girls basketball star Laya Hartman gaining attention

Okemos guard Laya Hartman

Okemos guard Laya Hartman

OKEMOS — Laya Hartman hates to be caught off guard.

The Okemos sophomore guard likes to know the questions before you ask. She likes to ponder over them before giving her responses.

Facing scrutiny since the eighth grade, the glare from the spotlight doesn’t bother her anymore, even though she can be reserved.

Hartman is a 5-foot-11 guard who is ranked as the 29th best sophomore in the country for the class of 2019, according to ESPN’s Dan Olson.

In her season opener against Chandler Park Academy, she had 28 points with six three-pointers to lead the team to a 57-28 victory.

As a freshman on a team that went 8-12 she averaged 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. She has already hit game-winning shots and caught the eye of some of the country’s top programs.

She has 12 Division I offers, including Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Villanova, Oregon State, Purdue, Indiana, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Akron.

“It’s been going good so far,” said Hartman. “We have three freshman this year. Jasmine (Clerkley) is in the post and we have Leah (Zaleski) at point guard. So I won’t have the ball in my hands as much. I won’t be the main point guard. I’m OK with that. I don’t see myself being a point guard in college. I’ll probably be a wing, slash guard.’’

Okemos has a new coach in Kristen Rasmussen, who played at Michigan State and in the WNBA.

“Our coach this year is more developed, so it’ll be a lot different this year,” she said. “I’ll have more help.”

That already is evident.

Clerkley had 13 points and pulled down 17 rebounds in her varsity debut, so Hartman does have more help. Young but talented, Okemos has the potential to make some noise around the Lansing area this year.

“There was a lot of freedom last year; there’s more structure this year,” said Hartman. “There’s more structure offensively, but (Rasmussen) is really big on defense. My role has changed because I won’t be the main point guard. I’ll still do scoring and assists. I like how she stresses defense.”

Hartman plays for an AAU team in Indiana, where she carved out a reputation at an early age.

“I like things about AAU basketball and high school basketball,” said Hartman. “I don’t feel as much pressure in high school basketball. There’s more room for me to play my game. AAU, there aren’t as many opportunities, but the level of play is a lot higher. There isn’t as much responsibility on you. There’s not as much ball movement. I just play my game and not be concerned about what other people are doing. Just know what you can do. Play with a lot of intensity.”

One of Hartman’s biggest fans is Okemos athletic director Ira Childress, who made sure he brought in a quality coach this year.

“Laya is not only of the best basketball student-athletes in the state, but she’s a great young lady and an excellent student,” said Childress. “Laya has a great work ethic and spends hours in the gym working on her game. Her success on the basketball court didn’t come by accident.”

The early offers didn’t faze her until she sat down and thought about it.

“I realized how it’s important, but I didn’t focus on it that much because there’s still things that I want to do,” she said. “I was thankful for it. I knew I didn’t need to stop practicing.”

Her conversation needs to improve on the court.

“I think I need to communicate more,” she said. “Be louder on the court and that’ll help with leadership and defensive intensity.”

Her game already speaks volumes.
